The shipping industry is undergoing a deep change towards its decarbonization. Increasing energy efficiency in ships and reducing emissions are key to meeting the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union (EU). A global need, whose objective is clear: to achieve a more sustainable future for the planet.
Onboard feasibility studies as a solution to maritime challenges
Technological investment opens up new possibilities to address this new reality and achieve the transition to a more sustainable industry. For this, the first step is the analysis of the existing fleet to advise the client on the most technical and economic viable solution for their particular situation.
It is necessary to study the feasibility of the most environmentally friendly possible transformations, acquiring, combining configurations and/or developing new or improved processes or services.
One example is carbon capture, a technology of the future that is emerging among shipowners who have to meet the IMO’s decarbonization targets, but wish to avoid having to change the entire propulsion system of their ships. CO2 samplers allow them to operate with fuels with a low environmental footprint and without economies of scale.
This solution has been designed under energy efficiency criteria and is both technically and economically feasible. In this way, they become an effective tool for shipowners to achieve sustainable success and mitigate emissions from fossil fuel production, thus reducing the environmental footprint of the energy sector.
From Sener’s team of experts in the naval sector, we advise our clients during their projects, to make them aware of the existing technologies and offer the system that best suits their needs.
