    Grupo Acideka is a holding company dedicated to the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of chemical products used in the integrated water cycle, paper, detergent and agrochemistry industries.

    In mid-2023, it contacted Sener to analyze its plant in Lantarón, Álava (Spain), in order to deal with different challenges in terms of sustainability, energy transition and decarbonisation, such as replacing diesel as a fuel source.

    Expected CO2 emission savings of 95%.

    Main challenges and needs:

    Need to eliminate diesel as a fuel source.
    Recover the hydrogen produced through its own process in order to save energy.
    Plan the use of photovoltaic energy as an alternative source.
    Decide on a fuel replacement solution that will impact as little as possible the continuity of the production process.

    Solution

    Energy saving measures, and steps to replace the fuel

    At Sener, we developed a conceptual analysis of possible actions aimed at decarbonization and energy transition, proposing specific energy saving measures, and steps to replace the fuel in the installations with the heaviest use.

    The study focused on:

    • Detailed analysis of the thermal demand of each of the 7 chemical processes in the plant and of the overall production process, as well as the current and expected energy balance of the facility.
    • An analysis of the technologies available on the market to assess the ones best suited to the Lantarón plant.
    • Analysis of each of the alternatives according to energy savings and associated carbon footprint reduction, necessary investment, payback, implications of the implementation in the production process and economic impact in a typical year, depending on each of the possible actions to be implemented..

    Measures to obtain the best thermal savings,
    with the lowest possible impact on the production process, and considering the compatibility of these measures.
    Calculation of the optimal sizing of the different energy assets proposed
    in order to ensure their proper operation, through Sener’s DAE (Sizing of Energy Assets) tool.
    Design of an electrification plan
    personalized to the customer’s needs for its decarbonization process, including a study of the application of different sources of power generation and storage, such as photovoltaic, salts, batteries and other technologies.
    Calculation of avoided emissions tCO₂/year
    to reduce the environmental impact of operations.

    Expected results:

    By implementing this action plan of energy-saving measures, Grupo Acideka could electrify its production process in its Álava plant, and reduce its CO2 emissions by nearly 95%.
