Sener developed 80% of its projects aligned with the SDGs

30/11/2023

Some of the sustainable projects developed by Sener include high-speed rail and urban transportation networks, urban and mobility plans, offshore wind power plants, green hydrogen or solar thermoelectric plants, in addition to other developments to reduce space debris, capture CO2 in the sea through ships specifically designed for this purpose; and contribute to the circular economy.

In line with its sustainability strategy, the company is also implementing measures to reduce its own carbon footprint, promote new sustainable lines of business and reduce consumption and waste generated.

The technology and engineering group Sener strengthens its commitment to sustainability by developing 80% of its projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the 6 objectives of the European green taxonomy. The company thus promotes the transition of companies towards business models that are more respectful of the environment and aimed at social progress through technology and innovation.

With the aim of decarbonizing industrial processes, implementing the circular economy, developing sustainable mobility alternatives and improving connectivity; and thanks to its diversification, Sener has carried out sustainable projects for activity sectors as diverse as space, energy, mobility, naval or digital.

In this way, the company is working on creating technologies in the aerospace industry that mitigate the existence of space debris, such as the E.T. PACK-Fly, a device capable of reducing the height of the orbit of space debris to cause its eradication at the time of re-entry into the atmosphere.

Likewise, Sener has created green hydrogen generation technologies to replace gas, advances in the design and implementation of offshore wind energy and has been a leader in the solar thermoelectric industry, has promoted more efficient urban rail transport, as well as transportation green maritime, developing ships capable of capturing CO2 from other nearby vessels, among other solutions. In the field of advanced facilities, the company is making progress to contribute to the energy supply of these facilities in a more efficient and sustainable way.

These projects are integrated into Sener’s sustainability strategy, based on ESG (environmental, social, and good governance) criteria, which also involves the implementation of measures to reduce its own carbon footprint, promote new sustainable lines of business, reduce consumption and waste generated and promote projects for social progress.

As Pablo García Velasco, Director of Sustainability at Sener, explains, “guided by a comprehensive vision, we seek not only to minimize our environmental impact and promote social development, but also to innovate in a sustainable way to respond to business and social challenges. Our strategy is based on transparent and ethical governance, supported by technology and innovation as fundamental tools to design a long-term sustainable ecosystem.”

Sener reduced its energy consumption by 20% through company-made solutions

To reduce its carbon footprint, the company has developed a decarbonization plan to achieve the goal of net zero emissions, in line with international commitments to respond to climate change.

Furthermore, in 2023 the group has managed to reduce its energy consumption – it has reduced its electricity consumption by 4.1% and has registered a reduction in natural gas consumption by 25.2% – through different energy efficiency tools, as indicated in its Sustainability Report. Among them, the company has implemented a solution in its own offices in Madrid, already offered and developed for clients: the EMS (Energy Management System), an intelligent and combined management system for energy resources, which allows maximizing efficiency and reducing costs. operational. The implementation of this tool has meant an energy saving of approximately 20%.

Equity and research, pillars for social progress

The company, in addition to developing sustainable engineering that responds to major global environmental challenges, seeks to provide solutions that allow for both social and economic progress. Hence, Sener is involved in different initiatives and agreements that promote social improvement in its professionals and in the community.

One of the company’s pillars in terms of social development is the promotion of diversity, equality and inclusion. With nearly 28% women in its workforce, Sener exceeds the Spanish average for female presence in companies in the industrial and technology sector, which is 20%. Along these lines, the company joined the Women and Engineering program of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2022 to promote initiatives that promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) vocations among women.

Likewise, Sener also promotes social progress through collaboration agreements with universities such as the Carlos III University of Madrid and the Polytechnic University of Madrid focused on providing resources to support research projects linked to the engineering sector.
