Andrade Gutierrez awards to Sener the engineering services for the new Portocem thermal power plant

Sener will provide the basic and detailed engineering planned for the EPC. This will be the third project for a thermal power plant entrusted by the construction company to Sener in the region, where it already has a strong presence following projects such as the GNA-I and GNA-II power plants, with a total installed power of 3.0 GW and that generate electricity using natural gas.

The plant, powered by natural gas and with an installed power of around 1.6 GW, is expected to be one of the largest in the region once complete in 2026.

The engineering and technology group Sener has been awarded a contract for various engineering services at the Portocem thermal power plant, which is owned by PORTOCEM Energia, a CEIBA Energy group company, and located in the northeast of Brazil, in the metropolitan area of Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará.

Specifically, Andrade Gutierrez (through its subsidiary, Consag Engenharia) and Mitsubishi Power, are consortium partners responsible for developing and commissioning the plant. Andrade Gutierrez has entrusted the Spanish group Sener with the basic and detailed engineering services needed to design and start up the project.

This is the third such contract that Andrade Gutierrez has entrusted to Sener, and the first one that Sener will carry out for Mitsubishi Power in Brazil. The milestone reinforces the position of the Spanish engineering and technology group in the Latin American market, especially in Brazil, where it has already successfully finished projects such as the GNA-I and GNA-II power plants, which together provide 3.0 GW of installed power, generating electricity from natural gas.

Andrade Gutierrez is one of the largest construction companies in Brazil and in all Latin America. Founded in 1948, it has taken part in some of the most important projects in the region, like the ones undertaken for the World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

The Portocem thermal power plant, which will be driven by natural gas, is expected to be completed in 2026. It will be one of the largest in Latin America, with an installed power of around 1.6 GW in an open cycle with 4 (four) advanced class gas turbines. Among other socio-economic benefits, it will help meet the energy demand of a growing region, promote investment in the northeast of the country and strengthen the local gas market.

“Grupo Andrade shares its approach to engineering with Sener, viewing it as the best tool for solving the most complex challenges. Like Sener, it is a company that is driven by excellence, so we are happy to collaborate with them to make possible what will be one of the largest thermal power plants in Brazil,” said the Director for Energy at Sener, Álvaro Lorente.
