Sener Aerospace and Defense, selected to develop the line-of-sight data links for the international Eurodrone program

Sener Aerospace and Defense, selected to develop the line-of-sight data links for the international Eurodrone program

01/03/2023

Airbus Defence and Space and Sener Aerospace and Defense have signed the contract to develop both line-of-sight data link systems (Wide Band and Narrow Band) for the Eurodrone program.

The goal is to undertake the development, series production and logistic in-service life cycle support of the two subsystems that will connect the unmanned aircraft with the different ground stations.

The contract is part of the European defense program Eurodrone, which is being managed by the OCCAR on behalf of the partner countries. Spain, with a 23% stake, is part of the initial group of four nations that realized that international collaboration is the most suitable instrument for developing their capabilities in a balanced way in the field of medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), and since October 2016, it has partnered with Germany (31%), France (23%) and Italy (23%) to make the project a reality.

The development of Eurodrone will guarantee Europe sovereignty in ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Recognition) in unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and promote the European defense technology and industrial base (EDTIB) in the participating countries, reducing the technological gap with the other global players that have traditionally dominated this field. Eurodrone could be integrated into civil air traffic and operate in non-segregated airspace, once the regulation allows it, and it will become one of the main pillars of any foreseen aerial combat system, such as the Future Combat Air System (FCAS).

In a scenario where hyperconnectivity provides an edge in any area, and especially in the case of unmanned platforms, the development of sovereign technology becomes a strategic element. The awarding of the Eurodrone Data Link to Sener Aerospace and Defense fits perfectly with the company’s strategy and provides a significant industrial return to Spain. This development model is also reinforced by industrial collaboration thanks to an strategic agreement between Sener Aerospace and Defense and Hensoldt France SAS.

Sener’s Respira® solution obtains the National Utility Model concession

Sener’s Respira® solution obtains the National Utility Model concession

01/03/2023

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office recognizes the technological capacity of Sener’s Digital Innovation team by granting a National Utility Model to the Respira Artificial Intelligence System for the next 10 years

This concession gives an exclusive right to operate in Spain this advanced ventilation control system, originally developed for underground facilities.

This artificial intelligence system, which has been operating since 2020 in the Barcelona Metro, has achieved extraordinary results that have directly improved the environmental conditions (temperature and air quality) for transport users, and saved 1.7 million euros a year in energy consumption.

The company Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona relied on the Respira system to intelligently regulate the ventilation in the metro system in order to improve environmental quality, hygiene and passenger comfort in the stations, while at the same time reducing energy consumption, in keeping with its sustainability targets.

Conventional underground transportation stations and networks do not have machines to produce cold or heat, so the only way to control the temperature and other environmental conditions is by introducing air from the outside at certain points and expelling it at other points. In addition, the entire tunnel network is connected, which makes it very difficult to control the temperature of each station independently. The system developed by Sener manages to solve these problems by analyzing more than 500 million data points a year and selecting the best ventilation strategy at any given time considering all the variables of the Metro network.

Over the next 10 years, Sener will have the rights to operate this invention for underground transport. Guillem Peris, the inventor of the Utility Model, comments: “We are very happy with this concession, since it demonstrates that, when faced with a complex problem, we find solutions by combining our technical know-how with the application of new technologies. We solve our customers’ problems. And we’re sure that this will open doors to many underground facilities in Spain and around the world. In Australia, for example, Sener has also been granted a Utility Model”.

Respira®

Originally designed for the complex infrastructure that is the Barcelona Metro, Sener’s team of engineers evolved the system to manage any type of HVAC installation, offering these advantages to other spaces such as airports, hotels, shopping centers, university centers, and more. Of note is the partnership agreement signed in October 2021 between SENER and AENA to carry out a pilot test of the artificial intelligence system at Manises Airport in Valencia, which yielded excellent results. The system is also in operation in Azkuna Zentroa, a multi-purpose building of the Bilbao City Council, as well as in the Sener headquarters in Tres Cantos.

Respira® is a solution developed by SENER that is implemented in addition to centralized management systems to operate HVAC systems autonomously by using artificial intelligence to achieve maximum performance of the system thanks to its predictive capacity, which translates into improved environmental conditions and lower operating costs.

Respira® can be viewed as a virtual and autonomous operator that is able to intelligently manage all the variables that affect the environmental conditions of a space, and thus minimize the running costs of HVAC systems through continuous, real-time operations.

Respira® is able to improve thermal comfort, air quality and energy efficiency in indoor spaces. Based on dynamic algorithms, it seeks to balance complex variables such as temperature, humidity, air quality, occupation and electricity consumption to predict environmental conditions inside rooms and offer greater comfort to users of the facility, while optimizing the energy consumption of the installation. By defining several operating criteria and reading variables in real time, the Respira® algorithm applies a centralized mode of operation, establishing an optimal operating strategy for every moment in time.

Sener presents its precise navigation solution, Naviground, at IDEX

Sener presents its precise navigation solution, Naviground, at IDEX

20/02/2023

Sener will be present at IDEX with its Naviground solution in the Spanish Pavilion at a joint stand with its partner URO.

Sener Aerospace and Defense presents its Naviground navigation system for manned and unmanned vehicles at IDEX, one of the leading international defense and security fairs. This is a digital solution that allows for several vehicles to be connected and coordinated, and that provides a precise navigation solution based on the fusion of data from different sensors.

The data collected by these sensors are processed in real-time in a processing unit, where they are merged to provide a more reliable and robust solution than those calculated by each sensor independently. Advanced data management techniques, information merging and artificial intelligence algorithms are used during the image processing.

Naviground operates in both structured and unstructured environments, i.e. off road. It is a modular and scalable solution that can be easily adapted and integrated based on the characteristics of the platform, following strict security parameters.

Sener will be present at IDEX with its Naviground solution at a joint stand with its partner URO, located in the Spanish Pavilion.

Naviground’s development came about as an evolution of the ARCO project financed by the Spanish Ministry of Defense (COINCIDENTE 2018) for the demonstration of a TRL 6 logistics convoy, which combines remotely operated, autonomous and manual drive vehicles, and which ended in 2021.

Space and robotics experience

Sener’s General Director of Defense, Rafael Orbe, notes that one of the most significant innovations is the fact that “the system must be able to operate in zero or denied GNSS/GPS signal environments and navigate unstructured (off-road) terrain. This means that, in addition to incorporating the conventional techniques applied in the civil sector, it is necessary to develop specific additional improvements in order to cover these more demanding scenarios.” He added: “Sener Aerospace and Defense has applied to Naviground its experience with successful navigation systems for space programs, such as the GNC/AOCS systems of the Herschel & Planck science satellites, and the IPXV and Space Rider spacecraft.”

The Naviground system also includes the knowledge acquired in projects undertaken in the field of robotics, such as the robot for laparoscopic surgery, the Dextrous Arm robotic arm for the International Space Station (ISS), the mirror cleaning robots at the Hector and Paris solar plants, and the development of autonomous vehicles in MUROC, SUGV and APOS-EU for the European Defence Agency (EDA).

Sener Aerospace and Defense also applies this technology to other fields, such as smaller platform localization systems with license plate recognition, localization and identification of persons functions.

Newly formed company Tactix-Sener wins work on major highway project, including bridge and tunnel design, supporting lead designer Arcadis on AU$1.35bn FGJV

The newly-formed company Tactix-Sener is a key partner supporting lead designer Arcadis in delivering the AU$1.35 billion Ferrovial Gamuda Joint Venture Coffs Harbour bypass main design and construct contract. The contract will deliver the main tunnels, structures, bridges and pavement works which will create a new 12km section of highway and upgrade an existing 2km section of Pacific Highway.

Tactix-Sener, in collaboration with Arcadis, will be responsible for nearly half of the detailed design including some of the project’s most critical elements. They will design all three tunnels and nine of the nineteen bridges. They will also provide Mechanical & Electrical, Intelligent Transportation System, F&L Safety and MEP systems design. The Maintenance & Operational Building and the technical buildings are as well part of Tactix-Sener’s scope.

Tactix-Sener is a leading provider of mass transit, rail, and roads project solutions across Australia. It formed in October 2022, when Spanish engineering group Sener acquired 60 per cent of Australian transport and infrastructure consultancy, Tactix. The combined Tactix-Sener now offers systems assurance and integration services, as well as design, across more than 15 disciplines, from design phase to construction supervision, procurement, testing and commissioning, operations, and maintenance.

Coffs Harbour bypass will provide a four-lane divided highway and is a priority for the Australian and New South Wales governments because of the Pacific Highway’s critical value to Australia’s economy. The bypass will form a key link in this vital piece of the nation’s infrastructure, which connects Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

Coffs Harbour is one of Mid North Coast’s largest urban centres, population 75,000. The upgrade is expected to divert 12,000 vehicles from the town centre and help motorists avoid up to 12 sets of traffic lights, cutting travel time by 12 minutes.

The design will minimise the bypass’ impact on biodiversity, including native forests, endangered flora and fauna corridors. It minimises impact on koala habitats on Roberts Hill and Gatelys Road ridgelines, restores sections of native forest, adds 16 fauna crossings, and has a two-hectare wet sclerophyll rainforest exclusion zone, where new plants species have been found.

Coffs Harbour is known as an area with high rainfall, so the bypass is designed to safely divert water away from the pavement surface while safeguarding local flood mitigations.

César Quevedo Galván, Managing Director Infrastructure, Sener Group, said, “The Tactix-Sener team is proud to contribute to this key project that will improve the daily transit for many people, reducing their travel time and increasing their quality of life.”

Ben Neary, CEO of Tactix, said the win was a major coup for the newly formed Tactix-Sener group and was a testament to its strength as a combined force in the Australian market.

31/01/2023

Sener Aeroespacial has signed a contract to supply scanner and calibration mechanisms and electronics for the Forum mission (Far-Infrared Outgoing Radiation Understanding and Monitoring), which will be the ninth Earth Explorer mission by the European Space Agency (ESA).

By measuring the radiation emitted to space by the Earth, this mission will provide new insights into the amount of planetary radiation and how to control it. This will lead to improvements in the climate models and, thus, to further precision in climate change assessments and climate prediction.

The mechanisms supplied by Sener Aeroespacial will allow sequencing the regular calibration and scanning points of the atmosphere’s surface in an automated way. As a result, it will allow building a complete map of the surface and monitoring its evolution over time, with the aim of understanding how temperature is regulated on the surface.

Pablo Campo, Project Manager of the Forum’s mechanisms, comments that “the aim of this mission is to obtain unknown information on the behavior of the climate and global warming. It involves studying an infrared band that is not covered by any other Earth observation satellite, in order to regulate the climate. We will be able to map the heat balance of the atmosphere and see, layer by layer and component by component, how much heat the Earth receives and stores from the Sun and how much it emits back into space. ESA has made this mission urgent.

Sener Aerospace has experience in similar mechanisms, such as the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite’s scanner. The insights obtained in this program will enable the team at Sener Aerospace to develop this system in an extremely short time, in line with the mission’s urgency.
