For the writing of this article, some parts have been created with artificial intelligence (ChatGPT) and others with human intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a topic of interest for decades, but recently there has been a breakthrough in this field thanks to the development of language models such as ChatGPT and image generation models such as DALL-E. These models have proven to be capable of processing large amounts of information and generating coherent and useful responses.
ChatGPT and DALL-E are just two examples of recent advances in AI. As technology continues to advance, we are likely to see more developments in the field that will change the way we live, work, and interact with the world around us. Therefore, we must dive into technological advances, not be afraid of them, and understand their benefits and potential risks. As Charles Darwin said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent; it is the one most adaptable to change”.
But ChatGPT and DALL-E are not the only existing tools; little by little and incredibly fast, many more AI tools have been introduced into our daily lives: Google Photos is able to identify your friends or make suggestions for improving your images, LinkedIn suggests answers to simple questions from your contacts, PowerPoint suggests improvements in the design of your templates… But what can we currently do with these tools?
Today, they serve as assistants in our most mundane tasks and processes: writing emails, reports, generating ideas, or drafting programming codes for us. As they develop and improve, we may see an increase in the automation of tasks and processes, from customer service to content production and artwork creation.
However, with the rapid advancement of AI, ethical concerns are emerging, such as data privacy, fair decision-making, or the future of many jobs and professions. Therefore, it is important that AI is developed responsibly, ensuring that the benefits outweigh the risks.
To understand the paradigm shift that is happening, this article is written some parts with the help of ChatGPT and some parts not. While writing it, different questions have arisen to me, which only time will answer, do we need to know who has developed each part? Will the need to reference who has said each sentence cease to exist?
Advanced AI applications in the real world
However, if we look not just to the future, but to the present, as I indicated at the beginning of the article, we will realize AI already has a long history of exploitation in the real world. For example, in engineering, infrastructure and facility management, it is used to optimize ventilation and air conditioning in enclosed spaces.
In our case, we developed RESPIRA®, an innovative intelligent air conditioning management system that uses Artificial Intelligence to improve energy efficiency, thermal comfort and air quality in buildings and infrastructures. Using artificial intelligence algorithms, it seeks balance in complex variables such as temperature, humidity, energy consumption and air quality to predict the environmental and operating conditions of the facilities.
This system is used by the Barcelona Metro, which monitors and processes hundreds of millions of data per year to improve the efficiency of the subway, its energy consumption and even the investment allocated to its management. It is also used in Madrid, in the M-30 tunnel network, automating its ventilation systems in case of fire.
This is just one example of many, but at Sener we have a long history of developing digital solutions that integrate AI to capture and use information from different sources and connected devices to make sense of them and create value for the business or use the latest innovations to identify patterns that anticipate failures and incidents in industrial equipment or any other type of asset.
In short, when talking about AI, we must be mindful of two areas: on the one hand, its most immediate real applications – especially those that allow us to create solutions that promote more sustainable development – but also its challenges.
