The six new awards raise the number of Sener projects under way within the EDF to 27 (within which framework it has collaborated with 305 companies from 25 countries), aligned with its centres of excellence: communications, autonomous systems, and actuation and control systems for missiles.
Once again, Sener has consolidated its position as a leading technological and industrial player in Europe after being awarded six projects in the 2025 call of the European Defence Fund (EDF). These new contracts strengthen the company’s commitment to the development of critical capabilities for European strategic autonomy through industrial and technological collaboration in high‑level international consortia. As a result, Sener now has 27 EDF‑related projects under way and, within the framework of the Fund, has collaborated with 305 different companies from 25 Member States and associated countries.
The awarded projects cover key areas such as collaborative air combat, next‑generation land and naval systems, advanced electronic architectures, multi‑domain collaborative combat and uncrewed subsea networks. All of them are aligned with Sener’s centres of excellence (communications, autonomous systems, and actuation and control systems for missiles) and with its accumulated track record in international defence programmes.
- In the field of air combat, Sener is participating in EICACS 2 (European Initiative for Collaborative Air Combat Standardisation – Phase 2), a project coordinated by Dassault that builds on the previous phase and promotes interoperability standards for European collaborative air combat, while also contributing to the development of future regulatory frameworks within the NATO environment.
- In the land systems domain, Sener is part of LATACC 2 (Land Tactical Collaborative Combat – Phase 2), coordinated by Thales, which aims to mature a sovereign European solution for tactical collaborative combat between crewed and uncrewed platforms, also integrating the air‑to‑ground dimension.
- Sener is also participating in TRIDENT, a project coordinated by Thales focused on the development of a next‑generation European system for counter‑battery capabilities, based on the integration of heterogeneous sensors, data fusion, AI‑enabled decision support and fire control that is resilient to emerging threats. Future threats, such as hypersonic projectiles and networked loitering munitions, require resilient and sovereign counter‑battery capabilities.
- Sener has been selected for SWORD (Stand‑off Anti‑Submarine Warfare Operations by Remote Deployment), coordinated by TKMS, whose objective is to develop a system‑of‑systems for extended‑range anti‑submarine warfare, with high operational availability, multi‑platform adaptability and an integrated sensor‑to‑effector functional chain.
- In addition, Sener is part of SHIELD (Subsea Heterogeneous Integrated Ecosystem Link Development), also coordinated by TKMS, which will develop a next‑generation uncrewed subsea network based on the integration of vehicles, sensors and AI‑enabled microservices, with the aim of providing a scalable, resilient and coordinated subsea architecture.
- Finally, in the field of advanced microelectronics, Sener is participating in EURECA (European Resilient Chiplet Architecture), a project coordinated by Thales whose objective is to create a resilient European chiplet architecture and a common library of hardware components for defence applications, strengthening the European supply chain for critical semiconductors. Chiplets are small functional blocks of integrated circuits that are combined within a single package to form a complete processor, instead of manufacturing a single large monolithic chip.
Rafael Orbe, General Director of Defence at Sener, states: “The results of this call once again reflect a strategy based on the selective analysis of programmes aligned with our areas of specialisation. Within the European Defence Fund, Sener maintains a sustained presence in key initiatives linked to our centres of excellence in communications, autonomous systems, and actuation and control systems for missiles, actively contributing to the development of strategic capabilities for Europe.”
These six new projects add to the portfolio of European Defence Fund programmes in which Sener has participated since the Fund was launched in 2021, consolidating a continuous track record in European initiatives of high technical complexity and strong industrial cooperation, in collaboration with the leading players in the European defence ecosystem.
