Toronto is celebrating today, Friday 5 December, the launch of the Finch West LRT, the new Line 6 of the Greater Toronto Area’s light rail network. This opening marks the first LRT line ever commissioned in the region and represents a significant step forward for urban mobility, as it directly integrates with the existing subway network. With an investment of €1.7 billion, this infrastructure stands as a major reference within the Canadian transit sector and features a prominent contribution from Sener. Following this inauguration, Sener has now participated in more than 100 kilometres of urban transit lines currently in operation across Canada.
The new LRT runs 10.3 km along Finch Avenue West, in the northwest of the city, connecting Finch West station on Subway Line 1 with Humber College. The project includes 16 surface stops, two underground stations, and a maintenance and storage facility. The full end-to-end journey is estimated at 38 minutes, with service frequencies of 5–7 minutes during peak hours and 7–10 minutes during off-peak periods, providing residents with a fast and efficient mobility alternative. The end client of the infrastructure is Metrolinx/Infrastructure Ontario, the agencies responsible for planning and modernizing the regional transportation system.
Sener has played a key role, bringing its expertise from similar projects and delivering innovative solutions while managing risks throughout all phases of development. This work was carried out in close collaboration with Arup, providing services to the construction consortium formed by Aecon, Dragados and Dufferin.
Sener’s scope covered the full design of the line up to 100% completion, including all systems: traction power and overhead catenary, signalling and tramway control systems, control centres, safety and communications systems, and the track design, including alignment development, as well as the overall configuration of the maintenance and storage facilities. Additionally, Sener was responsible for the technical certification of the entire scope during the construction phase and for the testing and commissioning activities, both essential to ensuring the line could enter service meeting the highest standards of safety and reliability.
Enrique Gómez, Director of Urban Transport at Sener, emphasises: “After more than seven years of joint work among the various partners, the commissioning of Line 6 is a milestone that strengthens Sener’s position as a strategic partner both in Canada and in international transport projects, driving sustainable and efficient solutions that enhance urban mobility.”
