IC20 Expansion in Portugal, designed by Sener, now operational

24/11/2025

The expansion of the IC20 road, a key infrastructure in the Lisbon metropolitan area, has recently come into operation, with design and technical assistance led by Sener. The IC20 is a high-capacity urban motorway connecting Almada with Costa da Caparica (Setúbal district), facilitating the daily mobility of thousands of users. The recently completed project involved widening a 3.9-kilometre toll-free section, increasing from three to four lanes between the A2/IC20 junction and the Casas Velhas junction. In addition, access to adjacent areas has been improved via the Hospital and Casas Velhas interchanges.

The works, carried out by AEBT (Autoestradas Baixo Tejo), lasted 20 months, from October 2023 to June 2025. This expansion ensures a significant improvement in traffic conditions, flow and safety both on the road and at junctions, allowing users to save time on their journeys and, consequently, enhance their quality of life. The project also incorporated new mobility and safety measures for pedestrians, including the construction of footbridges and the adaptation of access points, reinforcing Sener’s commitment to safer, more efficient and responsible mobility.

At Sener, we continue to bring our vision and expertise to projects that help improve transport and connectivity between people and places, consolidating our presence in Portugal and internationally.
