When discussing automation in microbiology, it is common to think about productivity, traceability, or standardization. However, there is another factor that is becoming increasingly important in laboratory decision-making: laboratory space and equipment footprint.
Laboratories are constantly evolving, but they rarely have additional square footage available. That is why today’s automation must not only offer high performance but also integrate efficiently into the existing laboratory environment. This is precisely the starting point of AUTOPLAK’s compact concept.
Rather than simply reducing the equipment footprint, this concept aims to concentrate as many automated processes as possible within a single instrument, optimizing the available space without compromising capacity or flexibility. AUTOPLAK automates plate inoculation, broth inoculation, Gram slide preparation and, optionally, bi-plate inoculation, all within a platform designed to integrate easily into the laboratory.
A design created to integrate into the laboratory
Introducing automation should not mean completely reorganizing the laboratory.
AUTOPLAK has been designed with a compact footprint that allows installation against a wall and requires front access only for operation and maintenance. This facilitates its integration into laboratories that are already in operation, minimizing modifications to the workspace and reducing the impact during installation.
Compact does not mean less capacity
Reducing the equipment footprint should not result in reduced functionality.
AUTOPLAK incorporates two independent sample trays that allow continuous sample loading without interrupting processing, configurable carousels that can be used as either input or output, compatibility with different tube types within the same run, and a unique four-loop inoculation system that supports different inoculation patterns. All of this provides the flexibility required to adapt to the different workflows of each laboratory.
In addition, the instrument is available in two configurations—Complete and Advanced—and can be expanded with optional modules for broth inoculation, Gram slide preparation, or bi-plate processing. This modularity allows automation to grow in line with the laboratory’s needs.
Space also means efficiency
Optimizing the available space has a direct impact on day-to-day laboratory operations.
A compact footprint facilitates staff movement, simplifies operation and maintenance tasks, and makes it possible to introduce automation even in laboratories with space limitations. In addition, sample traceability through barcode reading, process repeatability, reduced risk of contamination, and integration with the Laboratory Information System (LIS) all contribute to creating safer and more efficient workflows.
