International engineering and technology group Sener is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its establishment in Canada, marking a decade of contribution to some of the country’s most significant rail and urban transport projects. Since beginning operations in Canada in 2016, the company has built a strong local presence and established itself as an engineering partner to government authorities, transport agencies, construction companies and other stakeholders across the Canadian transport sector. 

Sener’s track record in Canada has developed alongside one of the country’s largest periods of investment in – and transformation of – its transport networks. Over the past decade, the company has contributed to projects including the Finch West LRT, Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, Ontario Line, Scarborough Subway Extension and GO Transit’s On-Corridor Works programme in the Toronto area; the Confederation and Trillium lines in Ottawa; the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) in Montreal; and the Valley Line in Edmonton, among others. 

This portfolio reflects a model that combines international expertise, knowledge of the Canadian market and close collaboration with local partners and clients. Sener brings multidisciplinary capabilities spanning multiple stages of the infrastructure lifecycle, from planning and design through to systems integration, risk management, and safety and support during construction and commissioning. 

One of Sener’s first major milestones in Canada was its involvement in the Finch West LRT, now Line 6 of the Toronto Transit Commission network. Sener provided engineering design for the line and its systems and supported their overall integration in collaboration with the construction partners. The 10.3-kilometre line connects Finch West Station with Humber College via 16 at-grade stops and two underground stations. 

Sener’s activity in the Greater Toronto Area has continued to expand through strategic projects such as the Ontario Line and Scarborough Subway Extension. On the latter, Sener is serving as lead engineering firm during the delivery phase of the stations, track and systems contract, providing detailed design across disciplines including architecture, structures, electromechanical systems, geotechnical engineering, ventilation, electrification, signalling and rail control, communications, and track. The company is also responsible for systems integration and safety certification. 

In Quebec, Sener has contributed to the development of Montreal’s REM as an Independent Checking Engineer across several sections of the network. The phased opening of its various segments has coincided with the expansion of the company’s activities in the province and the establishment of a permanent presence in Montreal. 

In Ottawa, Sener has served as an Independent Safety Advisor on extensions to the Confederation and Trillium lines. In Edmonton, its work on the Valley Line marked the expansion of its activities into Alberta, strengthening the national footprint that began in Ontario and now extends across offices in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver. 

Sener’s growth in Canada has been supported by the progressive expansion of its team and operational footprint. After establishing its first office in Toronto, the company subsequently expanded its presence to Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver. The Toronto office has also evolved to accommodate the growth of the team and an increasingly broad portfolio of infrastructure projects. 

This development reflects a long-term strategy focused on creating value from within the Canadian market. The company combines local expertise with access to an international network of specialists, enabling it to mobilise multidisciplinary teams and share knowledge and lessons learned across major transport projects in different cities and countries. 

Sener is entering its next decade in Canada with the aim of deepening these partnerships, further expanding its local capabilities and contributing to the next generation of rail and transport projects. The company aims to continue supporting its clients from the earliest stages of planning through to commissioning, bringing an integrated perspective that connects design, construction, systems, safety and operations. 

As it celebrates its first ten years in Canada, Sener is also marking seven decades of international experience. Today, the group employs more than 4,500 professionals across five continents and operates across the infrastructure, space and defence, energy, data centre and digital sectors.
