Intermodal Sol Station

SENER has carried out the preliminary design and detailed design for the new commuter railway station at Puerta del Sol in downtown Madrid. Sol station is a key intermodal transport hub included in the Madrid network and is located in the downtown district being one of the most popular tourist spots in the capital (size: 20,759 m2). The Sol Commuter Railway Station officially opened on 28th June 2009.
The station comprises two clearly different parts:
- The platform cavern, the world’s largest urban cavern excavated in soils, 200 m long, 20 m interior wide and 15 m high, is the largest urban underground cavern built in Europe and includes two lateral platforms connected by means of escalators and stairs.
- The access hall, structured in five levels, provides access from and to the surface, as well as intermodal connections with the Metro lines 1, 2 and 3. The project also includes provision for a connection with the Gran Vía Metro station.
The project was awarded the “Best Public Infrastructure of the Year 2009” prize of the Spanish Civil Engineering Chamber in Madrid.
