Jorge Sendagorta appointed an Honorary Member of the Association of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers in Spain02/07/2018 (Spain)
The Doctor of Naval Architecture, Jorge Sendagorta, current President of SENER, has been appointed an Honorary Member of the Coalition of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (COIN for its Spanish acronym), as a part of the institutional events held in honor of La Virgen del Carmen (Our Lady of Mount Carmel) celebration organized by both institutions on June 29.
The ceremony took place at the Zarzuela Racetrack. Jorge Sendagorta received an accredited diploma from the Dean and Chairman of the Coalition and Association of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers in Spain, José de Lara, and of the Dean and outgoing Chairman of the Coalition and Association of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers in Spain, Luis Vilches, in an event that included the Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism, Reyes Maroto.
Jorge Sendagorta has served as President of SENER, where he started working in 1986 as an Assistant Managing Director, since the year 2000. He also served as SENER’s first executive (CEO) until 2018 when, at 65, the position was given to Jorge Unda. Under Sendagorta’s direction, the engineering and technology group SENER has managed to employ 6,000 people and bring in over €1,300 million, and has established itself as an international reference because of its capacity for innovation and its international growth.
Jorge Sendagorta's career in the marine sector dates back to the start of his professional career, as he worked as a Technical Director in the marine structure shipyards of a major construction company and, subsequently, founded and directed SEAPLACE, an engineering company specializing in offshore platforms. Upon his arrival at SENER in 1986, as Assistant Managing Director, Sendagorta maintained marine activity as a pivotal sector of the company in Engineering and Construction. SENER first materialized as a Marine engineering company and, although it soon diversified to other areas - Aerospace, Energy and Environment, and Engineering and Construction (in the Infrastructure and Transport; Renewable, Power, Oil & Gas; and Marine sectors) - it has maintained its original function, Marine engineering. Today, SENER markets one of the most popular design and construction software in the world, the FORAN System, and continues carrying out marine engineering projects.
Sendagorta earned his doctorate in Naval Architecture from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain), where he later taught doctorate courses from 1978 to 1984. Jorge Sendagorta also has a master's degree in Ocean Engineering from M.I.T. (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) and completed his formal education by attending the Advanced Business Management Program (PADE for its Spanish acronym) at the IESE Business School in 1990.
Jorge Sendagorta’s professional career has been recognized on numerous occasions with awards and distinctions, such as, for example, his appointment as a Consul of Bilbao by the Bilbao Chamber of Commerce in 2014, the Bizkaia Sarean award presented by BizkaiRed, the Association for the Promotion of Biscayan Business Networks, also in 2014, the Best Basque Businessman award from Fundación Empresa Vasca y Sociedad (the Basque Company and Society Foundation), in 2011, or the Entrepreneur of the Year award from Ernst & Young, the IESE business school, Vocento, S.A., and Fortis.
