A doctorate student from the University of A Coruña receives the SENER Foundation Best Doctoral Thesis Award

Ibuki Kusano, from the School of Civil Engineering of the University of A Coruña, has been presented with the Best Doctoral Thesis Award by the SENER Foundation, an institution that belongs to the SENER engineering and technology group. Doctor Kusano received this award for her doctoral thesis entitled ‘Reliability Based Design Optimization of long-span bridges under flutter constraint’.

On Tuesday April 12, the President of the SENER Foundation and Honorary President of SENER, Enrique de Sendagorta, presented the prize to the author of the thesis and to her supervisors, the thesis Directors José Ángel Jurado Albarracín-Martinón and Aitor Baldomir García, in a ceremony at SENER’s offices in Madrid that was attended by the President of SENER, Jorge Sendagorta, the Director of the SENER Foundation, Juan Seijas, and the trustees of the Foundation.

Juan Seijas highlighted that “the excellent work undertaken in this doctoral thesis represents a step forward in the search for excellence that should be a guiding principal for all SENER engineers. Doctor Kusano has specialized in bridge engineering, where it is still essential to have a range of reliable tools to design safe structures that avoid not only disasters, but also discomfort for passengers, which in some famous cases have led bridges to be redesigned after opening”.

With this annual prize, now in its fourth year, the SENER Foundation aims to stimulate research of the highest level in the scientific and technical areas in which SENER operates, i.e. in the Aerospace, Infrastructures and Transport, Power, Oil & Gas, and Marine sectors. The jury therefore comprises professors from the aforementioned scientific and technological disciplines, as well as doctors from SENER’s technical team, and trustees of the SENER Foundation who also hold doctorates.

The SENER Foundation Best Doctoral Thesis Award consists of a €12,000 prize for the author of the thesis and a further €3,000 for the thesis supervisors. The next edition of the award will be announced in the third quarter of 2016 via the SENER Foundation website.
