This training is part of the collaboration agreement signed by the SENER Foundation, Engineering for Cooperation-Lankidetzarako Ingeniaritza (ICLI) and FIAD for the development of the socio-productive process of granulated panela in the highlands of Piura (Peru), which also includes support throughout the production process of granulated panela, to improve the productivity of the plots and alleviate problems such as: lack of knowledge of efficient production technology, lack of technical assistance and, above all, poor knowledge of administration, marketing and organization of producers, which is reflected in the poor conditions of the populations in the area.
In this sense, volunteers from the SENER Group are in contact with professors from the University of Piura and those responsible for FIAD to study possible technical improvements throughout the production process of granulated panela, such as the optimization of the ovens used, the efficient and responsible use of natural resources or the management of the waste resulting from the production of panela. This phase of the project is expected to be completed in the first half of 2021.
Local panela producers are also receiving literacy courses for letter and number recognition, contextualized in the panela trade, reading initiation and text comprehension. Likewise, awareness-raising talks are being given on the importance of hygiene, both for personal life, associated with the prevention of the coronavirus, and throughout the entire production process of granulated panela; on equality, human rights and prevention of domestic violence.
Work related to the project is expected to continue in the coming weeks, including the inclusion of more producers in the training courses and the planting of more hectares of sugar cane.
