High Gain Antenna Gimbal (HGAG) for the rover Perseverance of the Mars 2020 mission
The consortium will be responsible for the design of the basic and detailed project of the Institute, providing the partners’ knowledge in architecture, design of advanced hospital facilities and nuclear technology, very useful for the development of oncological facilities.
The completion of construction, led by OHLA, is scheduled for 2027, with an approximate total investment of more than 250 million dollars.
The architecture studio AIDHOS, specialized in innovative and functional hospital infrastructures, the engineering and technology group Sener and JG Ingenieros, a firm specialized in consulting and engineering for highly complex buildings, will participate in the design of the next National Cancer Institute of Chile (Instituto Nacional del Cáncer de Chile). The consortium formed by the three companies will carry out the design of the basic and detailed project; OHLA will be the company responsible for its construction and subsequent operation as it is a project of the Chilean hospital concessions program.
Located in Santiago de Chile, this 90,000 m2 facility will be a highly complex cancer treatment center, a national reference in its specialty. The Institute will have 249 hospital beds, including those for intensive care, neutropenia, and hematology, and will include specific services for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer such as radiotherapy, with 8 accelerator bunkers, in addition to 2 brachytherapy bunkers, a radiology service of high technology, 13 surgical rooms and day hospital.
The experience accumulated by AIDHOS, Sener and JG Ingenieros will facilitate the future infrastructure being an efficient, innovative, and technologically advanced facility.
AIDHOS will direct the architectural design of INCANCER, applying the knowledge acquired from its extensive and recognized experience in hospitals and healthcare environments. The high specialization of AIDHOS will provide the project with special care in the functionality of the Institute, a humanization of the building that contributes to the healing of the patient and the good work of the public servants, and environmental care in its conception. Furthermore, as it is a building inserted in a consolidated urban environment, integration with the surrounding heritage area will be enhanced.
In the case of Sener, the company acts as responsible for project coordination, BIM management, quantitative study and coordination of various disciplines such as structural design, landscaping, radiological protection, waste management (urban and hospital), paving and insertion measures in urban roads and structure design. Sener has extensive experience in the field of nuclear plant design and associated technology, useful knowledge in the design of oncological facilities. Likewise, Sener has a solid track record in the field of architecture and design of hospital facilities, such as the New Hospital of Malaga, in Spain, which will be an advanced reference healthcare center for acute patients, with high specialization and sophisticated healthcare technologies, a bioclimatic, efficient, and highly technical building, a project in which he already collaborated with the AIDHOS studio.
JG Ingenieros will oversee the design of facilities engineering and its 14 subspecialties of electrical, thermal, air conditioning, fuel gas, centralized control, structured cabling, clinical gases, fire safety, pneumatic mail, lighting, water evacuation, water drinking water, treated water and irrigation. This work represents a great design and compatibility challenge due to its scale and complexity, something for which JG has proven to be prepared throughout its history with more than 300 engineering designs of healthcare buildings carried out internationally. Within this extensive experience, very highly complex projects stand out, such as, for example, the design of the new BSL4 laboratories that will be built in Madrid, a unique type of research building in Spain that will have the maximum security of biological containment, projects where JG has provided complete architectural and engineering services, leading, among many others, the ongoing project to reform the hospitals of Maipú and Florida in Chile, or the design of the expansion and renovation of the AUNA Delgado Clinic in Peru, one of the best private clinics in the country and in Latin America, with more than 64,000 m2 and LEED certification, which already counted with engineering services from JG facilities in their original design.
The development of the project is a great challenge in the field of cancer hospitals, due to the bunkers for accelerators and radiotherapy rooms contemplated, which require structural solutions with specific requirements. The completion of construction is scheduled for 2027, with an approximate total investment (including the contract awarded to the consortium) of more than 250 million dollars.
Belén Ruiz Casares, partner of AIDHOS and director of the project, recognizes “the exciting challenge of incorporating into this new infrastructure specialized in oncology all the knowledge accumulated by the participating companies and ensuring not only the optimal functioning of the building and the technology installed there, but especially the creation of the appropriate environment for their experience, being sensitive to the particular situation of patients who will frequently come to INCANCER for the treatment of their ailments.”
Juan Francisco Paz, director of Architecture at Sener, highlights: “technology and engineering have enormous potential to improve our quality of life, especially when we take advantage of the knowledge of different areas and disciplines to achieve a result greater than the sum of the parts, as is the case. The National Cancer Institute of Chile will be an oncological benchmark thanks to its unique technological capabilities, for the benefit of its patients.”
Rubén Martínez, international director of JG Ingenieros, comments: “Projects such as the new National Cancer Institute give meaning to the effort involved in the internationalization of our companies and are a clear example of the scope of the potential of collaboration between companies in an increasingly market. increasingly `glocal´ and complex. In this case, the sum of 4 Spanish companies and their corresponding local collaborators will carry out the design, construction and operation of a benchmark building for the country that will improve the quality and life expectancy of many Chileans in the future.”
